Originally a Georgian-style country house owned by a wealthy wool merchant named John Blayds during the 18th century. The Oulton estate was inherited by John Calvery in 1806, and extensive renovations were made to add a new wing to the north, housing a ballroom and library, besides a new stable block. In 1855 Leeds architects William Perkin and Elisa Blackhouse were hired to design a more grand house. It was then that it became known as Oulton Hall. In 1863, the house was purchased by the Midgely family, who continued its renovations and began to modernise the building, adding central heating and upgrading the plumbing system. At this point, a new entrance hall was built along with a billiards room and a rather stunning conservatory. During the First World War, its owner, Horace Calvery, opened its doors to refugees until the hall was used as a hospital by the military. In 1925, the Calvery family declined and moved to Canada, which led to the closure of the hospital. Afterwards, it was bought by West Riding Council and used as a hospital for over 200 male patients with mental illness until a change in the Mental Health Act during the 1960s forced its closure as its patients moved to residential services. 

By 1974, Oulton Hall had become a grade 2 listed building, and although plans for it to become a police headquarters were unfulfilled, it became a police training facility for a short time. In 1986 it was bought by Leeds city Council, and an 18-hole golf course and club were made. The main hall, however, remained an empty shell.

In 1991 the hall was purchased by DeVere Hotels and underwent a £20 million renovation. Overseen by designer Anne Jordan and National Heritage, using national records and historic photographs, it was carefully restored using original fragments of the building decor. 

On 7th June 1993, the luxury Oulton Hall Hotel opened. It soon became the first hotel in the North of England to reach 5-star status, plus a red rosette as a Bronte restaurant. In November 2014, Oulton Hall was purchased by QHotels, and since then a further £3 million has continued to be invested in refurbishments.

Oulton Hall Hotel is situated in the heart of Yorkshire, with easily accesible links from the M1 and M62 motorways. On the western side of Leeds city, the village of Oulton can be found next to Rothwell, approximately 6 miles from the city centre, where fabulous bars and restaurants can be found. 

As you enter the grounds, you are met by the tree-lined, sweeping drive leading to the incredible 18th-century grade II listed country mansion, which sits in over 320 acres of stunning landscaped gardens.
